A Royal Air Maroc passenger plane made a safe emergency landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on Sunday evening, officials said.

The incident involved Royal Air Maroc flight 685, a Boeing 737-400, which was scheduled to depart Schiphol Airport at 9.10 p.m. local time. It reportedly took off with a delay of about 17 minutes, at approximately 9.27 p.m. local time.

A spokeswoman for Schiphol said the flight - which was scheduled to fly to Nador in Morocco - made an emergency landing shortly after taking off. She said the aircraft landed safely on runway 18R, which is also known as the Polderbaan runway.

"The aircraft returned to the gate on its own without problems," the spokeswoman said, while adding there were no injuries.

Unconfirmed reports said one of its engines caught fire, but officials did not immediately confirm that. A source at Schiphol said the plane had reported engine problems, causing it to request an emergency landing.

Royal Air Maroc appeared to downplay the problem, only saying a minor problem caused it to return to the airport. The airline said reports that an engine was on fire were not true, but provided no other explanation.
